Very few Mexican trucks are now traveling into the U.S. interior, according to John Hill, FMCSA chief. Because there so little interest in the pilot program in government won’t be able to draw any valid conclusions about it. Companies were reluctant to buy insurance for their trucks when they expected the program to shut down.
The battle shifted to Capitol Hill during February and March.
In hearing after hearing, Transportation Secretary Mary Peters faced angry member of Congress who told her she was breaking the law by keeping the border open. Congress last year passed a law cutting off funding off the pilot program. Peters ignored Congress and refused to put the brakes on it.
The transportation Department has failed to put measures in place to make sure that every truck would be checked. “We don’t know that every truck has been inspected.”
