Council Brown blast republicans.

8:30pm
Proposal 187 was brought up before the council with turn into a heated debate between councilors. 187 is concerning the reduction of the Marion city county tax that was passed last year which the citizens protested.

Legal advisor Mr. Elrod said he was not sure that state law would permit this to happen.

Councilor Brown point out that the state has taken over responsibility of certain finical responsibility that concerned this tax.

“WHEREAS, the legislature has enacted pension relief that allows the members of the Marion County Income Tax Council to return to the tax paying renters, home owners and businesses in Marion County, who were asked to pay the new taxes, the relief offered by the legislature’s action”

I could tell that Councilor Brown really enjoyed this debate since he voted for this tax raise while most republicans voted against it and made a political issue of it as we all know.

There was a vote to cut off debate on the issue by a vote of 15 to 13. And a vote of 16 to 12 to send it back to committee. It will be put back on the committee docket for July 22.
Councilor Ben Hunter and Councilor Lutz said they voted against cutting off debate but said they wanted it to go back to committee for more study.

Now the question: If this tax important to the citizens before the election, is it as important to us now. Will the citizens show up at any committee meetings on this issue. Councilor Brown again said that is was the right thing to do.

The question I have for the councilors who want to revisit this issue is why did you vote no to paying our property taxes in installments?
